"Keith Jozsef was the evening's scene-stealer."—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

One day, a magician walks into the 16th-century Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great's court, and proclaims his talents far surpass those of Akbar's own court. How does Akbar deal with such audacity? Does he succumb to the dazzling illusions of the magician? Come find out!

THE LITTLE RANI --

Stories of Hope and Magic from Ancient India

Dances of India's 32nd annual Premiere Performance!

AUDIENCE REVIEWS ON THE LITTLE RANI

"Thank you! That was an awsome show!"--Cynthia McCrea, St. Louis

"Dances of India" uses sight and sound to carry you to an exotic world of gods and godesses, heroes and villians, and the certainty that things will turn out well. The performers are incredibly talented, the costumes are gorgeous, and the music is wonderful. It's a program not to miss. "--Ladonna Weekes, St. Louis

"The show yesterday was absolutely great, congrats!
Now I know why I like your dances so much: it's because they always tell a story, so it's like two in one, not only great choreography and music, but also morally valuable content."--Peter Wochniak, St. Louis

"I did make it to the show yesterday, and I absolutely loved it!  I think it was the best one yet!  The story was so well incorporated into the dances, and the colors were more vibrant than ever.  The set design was incredible, and really added to the overall beauty of the production.  I loved the narration, and found it very poetic in parts.  I may have mentioned that I read “The Little Princess” as a child, and the performance brought the story back and enabled me to appreciate it all the more."--Laura Zimmerman, St. Louis

""Your shows are wonderful. It's one of the only performances I've ever attended twice simply because I enjoyed it so much." --Julie Kalman

"It feels like we're at the Fox! (a premier venue in St. Louis which hosts Broadway musicals)."--Ashwin Dundoo, St. Louis

AUDIENCE REVIEWS FROM PREVIOUS PERFORMANCES:

2008'S AKBAR'S MAGIC TRUNK:

"The show was wonderful. the magician was a lot of fun and a great addition
to the whole spectacle--where did you guys find him?
I loved it, the story was great and the dancing, as usual, was terrific. " --Annette Prince, St. Louis

2007's NARASIMHA AND AN INCANTATION OF INCARNATION--THE TEN WONDROUS LIVES OF VISHNU:

"I just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed the show Saturday night.  It was beautiful, fun and educational all in one.  The narration was very successful."--Gina Gibbons, St. Louis

"What an amazing evening. I was really taken
with the first piece, the child's faithfulness and the lion/man incarnation, a story I had not known before.  It was so beautifully danced! Asha Prem's solo dance was such an ambitious
undertaking. She's quite simply amazing.  When I watched the choreography unfold in the second section, attributing its beauty to Prem's art, it took on a whole dimension I would not have experienced had I not seen her
dance.

But the ten incarnations piece was the highlight.  The concept and its execution both were beyond all expectation.  Strauss, Verdi, Ravel.  Who would have thought?!  And the variety of dance style, too, worked beautifully.  Your narration was clear and pulled a thread through the narrative that was a lifeline for one who knew only a couple of the stories.
I loved this dance! ."--Marjorie Stelmach, St. Louis

"It was amazingly beautiful.  I especially liked the second "act" with the tap dancing, flamenco and ballet.  I loved the story and the accompanying dances. "--Pat Noland, St. Louis

"So much fun! Always a great show."--Scott Emmanuel, St. Louis

OTHER EVENTS:

Dances of India has performed in several cities in the US, as well as  all over St. Louis and in many places in Missouri as well. In addition to its annual performances, Dances of India conducts workshops and dance demonstrations in schools, both in the city of St. Louis, as well as the metropolitan area.

The company taught and gave dance demonstrations in every branch of the St. Louis County Library system for two years in a row, and has also performed in the St. Louis Public Library.

In addition to these educational programs, Dances of India has performed in the St. Louis Art Museum, for occasions as diverse as the opening of the East Asian art galleries to a celebration commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King. It has performed at international festivals at several universities and colleges in the area, such as St. Louis University, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Webster University, and SIU-E. It performed at Fair St. Louis for years, when it was known as the VP fair.

Dances of India has also performed at several corporations in the St. Louis metropolitan area, such as Anheuser-Busch, Citi Mortgage, Enterprise Rental, At &t,  and American Family Insurance, among many others.

Neil Mandel from American Family Insurance said of a performance in August 2009,, " Our employees thoroughly enjoyed your dancers, their costumes, and the music.  What made the performance especially enjoyable and rewarding was the explanation of the symbolic meanings of the Dances and the information about Indian culture that was shared with our employees.  Our employees also had fun when they got to join in and participate with the Dancers."

In addition to its own performances, Dances of India has been sponsoring the St. Louis Dance Festival Showcase, a gathering of all the major dance companies and rising stars in the area, for two evenings of performances. 2009 marked the tenth annual St. Louis Dance Festival Showcase, which featured everything from ballet to flamenco to modern to Middle Eastern and more! More than 25 companies participated.
